Celebrating 30 years of offshore wind

At Ørsted, our vision is to create a world that runs entirely on green energy. By transforming the global energy system, we can minimise the effects of man-made climate change.

Offshore wind is a key solution in the transition to green energy. In just a few decades, offshore wind has gone from being an unproven idea to a viable energy source produced at scale.

The story of this development dates back to Denmark in 1991, with the construction of the world’s first offshore wind farm at Vindeby, Lolland. Fast forward to today, and we’re celebrating offshore wind’s 30th anniversary – marking a remarkable journey with even brighter future ahead.

A lot has changed since the construction of Vindeby, which could supply power to 2,200 Danish homes. Today, we’re seeing a shift towards larger and more powerful wind farms, such as the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Hornsea 1, where 174 wind turbines now supply green power to well over one million homes in the UK.

Today, our wind turbines are so powerful and efficient that just one large offshore wind turbine can generate more power than the entire Vindeby Offshore Wind Farm.

Hear Frank Olsen’s story – an early pioneer in offshore wind

Frank was part of the team responsible for the construction of the world’s first offshore wind farm. Hear his story to learn how a utopian idea became a reality.

“There were two drivers in wind power – those who wanted to prove that it didn’t work, and those who wanted to prove that it did.”

Frank A. Olsen

Head of Wind Turbines in Elkraft, now Ørsted, at the time of Vindeby’s construction.

Frank wasn’t alone in his offshore endeavours. We’ve talked to three other employees who were involved from the outset, and who – unknowingly – became pioneers of a technology which is now considered one of the key solutions in the world’s transition to green energy.

Denmark: leaders in the green transformation

Pioneering efforts in the offshore wind sector have enabled Denmark to inspire and show other countries that the green transformation is both possible and profitable. These efforts also demonstrate that growth can go hand in hand with the green transformation.

At Ørsted, we’re proud of having constructed the world’s first offshore wind farm in the shallow waters off Lolland – just as we’re proud of having laid the foundation for a global offshore wind journey that creates growth and jobs.

Together, we can accelerate the adoption of offshore wind and help create a world that runs entirely on green energy.

The future of offshore wind projects

At Ørsted, we’ve made a name for ourselves as the world leader in offshore wind. Today, we’re responsible for around a quarter of the world’s offshore wind power, with projects spanning all over the globe.
