Mads Nipper is Group President and Chief Executive Officer at Ørsted, the global leader in offshore wind power and one of the largest renewable energy companies in the world. Mads Nipper and Ørsted are guided by a clear vision: to create a world that runs entirely on green energy. Since taking the helm as CEO of Ørsted in early 2021, he has led the company through a crucial time in the green transformation, when the need to accelerate the build-out of renewable energy in a financially viable, sustainable, and equitable way has never been greater.
Mads Nipper has announced a company-wide ambition of installing 35-38 GW renewable capacity by 2030 across offshore wind and other renewable technologies, including onshore wind, solar power, and renewable hydrogen. He is responsible for ensuring that Ørsted delivers on these build-out targets in the company’s biggest construction year yet, with 7.6 GW of offshore wind projects and 1.6 GW of onshore projects under construction during 2024. This is on top of over 15 GW of renewable capacity already in operation across three continents.
Mads Nipper has also overseen an expansion of Ørsted’s existing sustainability stewardship, ensuring the company builds green energy that benefits climate, nature, and people. Ørsted was the first company with an SBTi-validated net-zero target. Since 2006, Ørsted has reduced the emissions intensity of its energy generation (scopes 1-2) by 92 %. Under Mads Nipper’s leadership, the company is aiming to reduce the emissions intensity across the full value chain (scopes 1-3 excluding gas sales) by 99 % by 2040 compared to 2018 levels. Ørsted is ranked as a world-leading energy company on climate action by the World Benchmarking Alliance and CDP.
Mads Nipper believes businesses should be a catalyst for change and is personally engaged in several governmental and business fora to promote a sustainable transformation. Among others, Mads Nipper is part of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders & Electricity Governors, and he represents Ørsted in the First Movers Coalition, a public-private partnership initiated by the US State Department and WEF.
Before joining Ørsted, Mads Nipper was Group President and CEO of the Grundfos Group. Prior to that, he was Chief Marketing Officer and member of the Management Board of the LEGO Group. His educational background is an MSc in International Business from Aarhus School of Business, Denmark.
