LED bulbs slash energy bills

Prices are coming down, consumer confidence is rising, and LED bulbs are making their way into Danish homes.

It is no wonder that LED bulbs are growing in popularity, because they offer a huge savings potential. The increasing demand – both for light bulbs and information – is evident at DONG Energy, which has just launched energi-shoppen.dk. Here, you can get advice and answers to questions, and also order quality light bulbs from Philips at prices 25 per cent below suggested retail prices. You can also calculate how much you will be able to save.

Søren Bach-Pedersen, Energy Consultant at DONG Energy, is well aware of the growing popularity of LED bulbs:

"We’re contacted by customers on a daily basis who want to know more about LED lighting, and they all get the same advice: it's a really good idea to replace both energy-saving light bulbs and filament bulbs with LED bulbs. When you switch from filament bulbs to LED bulbs, your electricity consumption plummets, because LED bulbs use up to 75 per cent less power than the filament bulbs."

A family can quickly save up to DKK 2,000 a year by replacing their filament bulbs with LED bulbs. In addition, a quality LED bulb will typically last for up to 15 years, so you can quickly recover your investment.

However, there is still a little confusion about which bulbs to choose and the quality of LED lighting. About LED lighting, Søren Bach-Pedersen said:

"The teething troubles are over. The LED bulbs now emit a 'warmer' light similar to that from a traditional filament bulb. The old models had a 'colder' colour. This doesn't apply to those available today, which are 2,700 Kelvin bulbs.

"Kelvin is the measure of colour temperature, and bulbs will typically be in the 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin range. The pleasant yellow light from a filament bulb is close to 2,700 kelvin, and the higher Kelvin, the colder and more white the light is.

Three tips

When selecting LED bulbs, remember to check:

  • the size of the lamp socket
  • the required strength of the bulb
  • what shape fits the lamp.

In addition, it is always a good idea to think about in which lamp the bulb should be fitted. For lamps where the bulb is visible, you may opt for a transparent bulb resembling the old-fashioned filament bulbs.
