1.8 billion conversion project creates lots of activity
More than 300 construction workers, fitters and technicians are currently assembling all the many parts that will enable Skærbæk Power Station to use wood chips as fuel.
There is plenty of activity at Skærbæk Power Station where more than 300 construction workers, fitters and technicians are busy converting Skærbæk Power Station.
The construction of two wood chip boilers on the quay in front of unit 2 of Skærbæk Power Station is progressing at full speed, as is the excavation and concrete work for the conveyor system and the wood chip storage facility.
Leif Høgh Sørensen, who is responsible for the Skærbæk Power Station conversion project for DONG Energy, said: "We're installing the parts for the two new wood chip boilers in the building's heavy steel structure. The individual sections are lifted and welded together above the boiler grate, which is located at the bottom of the boiler. The boilers will be suspended in steel straps to allow the boiler steel to expand when heated."
The approx. 40-metres tall boiler house will subsequently be clad with grey plates, but right now, you can see all the many fitters who are busy lifting and assembling all the parts.
First shipload of wood chips arrives in autumn
DONG Energy expects that the first shipload of wood chips will arrive at Skærbæk Power Station's newly renovated quay in the autumn. Construction workers are therefore busy building the wood chip storage facility, which will be able to accommodate up to 80,000 cubic metres of wood chips, as well as completing the foundations for the conveyor belts that will transport the wood chips to the wood chip storage facility.
"Both the conveyor belts and the wood chip storage facility must be ready when the first ship arrives in the autumn, so at the moment the workers are extremely busy casting the channels for the conveyor belts that will transport the wood chips from the storage facility to the boilers," said Sørensen.
The belts will transport the wood chips from the quay to the wood chip storage facility. Here, the wood chips will be placed at top of the wood chip pile. From two screw conveyors located at the bottom of the storage facility, the wood chips will be transported via conveyor belts to the boilers. In this way, the 'oldest' wood chips will be the first to be converted into electricity and heat.
In addition to focusing on all the ongoing activities on the site, the project team is also planning the next activities. Before long, two new wood chip cranes will be arriving, and the wood chip boilers will be connected to the existing unit 3 during the planned summer inspection.
DONG Energy expects to start the commissioning of the plant in autumn 2016, enabling the power station to supply district heating based on wood chips in the 2016/17 heating season. The conversion of Skærbæk Power Station is expected to be completed in April 2017.
