We are utilising the renewable energy sources in the Faroe Islands

The IT system Power Hub has helped the Faroe Islands save CO2 and reduce the number of power cuts.
The Power Hub system monitors the power grid and briefly switches off selected units when there is not sufficient renewable energy to supply the power grid.

Propagation of Power Hub

  • DONG Energy has entered into an agreement with Schneider Electric to propagate Power Hub to other island communities.
  • Power Hub will be offered to a number of industrial customers in Germany and the UK. Among other things, the companies can save money by switching units on and off to follow price fluctuations in the energy markets.
  • On a trial basis, DONG Energy is working with Danish companies to control the energy consumption so that consumption is high when the production from renewable energy sources is highest.
Power Hub, which is a system developed by DONG Energy, helps make the most of the renewable energy sources and ensures a reliable power supply in a more environmentally friendly way. The system monitors the power grid and briefly switches off selected units when there is not sufficient renewable energy to supply the power grid.

As island communities get more and more renewable energy, their energy system becomes more vulnerable. Lack of cable connections to the mainland or to other islands may result in major power cuts when consumption is high and the wind power production is low. Therefore, many islands have to supplement their power supply with diesel generators, which are both expensive and polluting, in order to be able to stabilise the power supply if the renewable energy supply is not sufficient. This is a well-known problem in the Faroe Islands. The group of islands has one of the highest shares of renewable energy and with Power Hub, DONG Energy has helped stabilise the supply since 2013.

In the Faroe Islands, a large fish farm and a cold store have been connected to Power Hub. In less than a second, refrigerating and freezing compressors and a heat pump can be disconnected from the power grid during short intervals without any problems. The company saves money due to lower consumption and the power system avoids overload and power cuts.
