Green biogas solutions for industry

Industries around the globe produce consumables to supply food, beverages and pharmaceutical products. Their process and final product may vary, but what they all have in common is a non-stoppable production of organic residues and bi-products, which sometimes can be up to hundreds of thousands of tons a year.

At the same time, many companies have set targets to reduces their CO2 emissions from their production facilities. For companies, highly dependent on natural gas, conversion to bio-methane is the obvious solution. The tricky part is to acquire the bio-methane as it is not available in the market.

How it works

The process is simple. The industrial partner provides Ørsted with the organic residues from their production. The organic residues are placed in tanks to begin an anaerobic digestion process, which is the natural breakdown of this matter into carbon dioxide, methane and water by microorganisms. After 20-30 days, the gas is collected and can be converted into electricity, heat, transportation fuel and fertiliser to be used on farmland. This solution supports the circular economy and a greener world.

Kalundborg Bioenergy
– Ørsted’s industrial biogas plant powered by Novo Nordisk and Novozymes

Kalundborg Bioenergy is a collaboration of Ørsted and Bigadan with Novo Nordisk and Novozymes. The plant will treat 300,000 tonnes of waste from insulin and enzyme production at Novo Nordisk and Novozymes and produce what is equivalent to the annual natural gas consumption of 5,000 households.

Establishing this large scale production of biogas, and the industrial partnership with Ørsted, was made possible because Novo Nordisk and Novozymes have ambitious goals for utilizing waste streams to produce sustainable energy.

The plant became operational in 2018.

  • All nutrients passing through the bioerefinery plant will be recovered and used as fertilisers
  • The produced biogas will replace natural gas and thus reduce CO2 emissions by 17,000 tonnes a year
  • Five to six employees will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the plant. Including sub-suppliers, the plant will create 15-20 new jobs once in operation.
