Offshore wind

Leading the global green energy transition

Offshore wind, a rapidly growing energy technology, has a vital role to play in the global transition to green energy. And it has huge potential around the world – a potential that Ørsted is working to realise as we expand our offshore wind operations across Europe, North America, and Asia.

Ørsted leads the way

Ørsted is the global leader in offshore wind. We construct and operate offshore wind farms in Denmark, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Taiwan, and the US. And it’s our aspiration to bring offshore wind energy to even more markets. Our ambition is to have installed 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.

Since pioneering the world’s first offshore wind farm in 1991, we’ve built more wind farms at sea than any other company worldwide, and broken the record for the largest wind farm in the world several times over. We have by far the largest installed capacity, the deepest technical skills, and the biggest pipeline of new projects among offshore wind developers.

Technological pioneers

Offshore wind used to be very expensive to construct and operate. But through technological innovation, we successfully brought the cost down so that, just like onshore wind and solar energy, it’s now possible for offshore wind to generate electricity with a price per megawatt hour that is cheaper than that of newly built fossil fuel power generation in northwest Europe.
And our pursuit of technological progress is ongoing as we seek to make offshore wind energy even more competitive. We’ve been the first to install the last four generations of wind turbines, the most recent being the Vestas 8 MW offshore wind turbine at our Burbo Bank Extension Offshore Wind Farm.

Partnering for success

Without our partnership model, we wouldn’t be able to maintain the pace at which we’re building out offshore wind. Typically, we divest 50 % of each of our offshore wind farms to industrial and institutional partners as a way to unlock the capital needed to invest in new renewables projects.

Our wind power partners

Our vision, to create a world that runs entirely on green energy, is not one we can achieve alone. So, we’re always looking to enter new partnerships in the markets where we operate.
