An EPC powerhouse

As the company that built the world’s first offshore wind farm, Ørsted got its start in renewables as a power developer – not as the global generator we are today. That first project off the coast of Denmark required a full range of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) capabilities, and we succeeded against considerable odds. 
Today, we provide end-to-end EPC capabilities – from site investigations and detailed engineering to procurement of major components, offshore installation, commissioning, and handover.  And that’s not to mention the complex work of bidding for a project, negotiating contracts, and reaching agreement successfully. Our EPC work is carried out in-house and in collaboration with trusted contractors. 

Wind farms built to operate


Building an offshore wind farm is inherently complex. Marine conditions, logistics, heavy-lift installations, cable routes, grid connections, multiple contractors, and local stakeholder interfaces all elevate project risk.

Decades of delivery across Europe, Asia Pacific, and North America have helped us build unique strengths in specialised engineering, component procurement, marine installation sequencing, and operational handover.

By integrating all the phases of project development and construction under one roof, we’re able to reduce interface risk, keep schedules clear, and lock in long-term performance from day one. This approach benefits all project stakeholders – from the project owner to the end consumers of the power we generate.

In fact, it even benefits us – as Ørsted typically retains at least a 50 % stake in all projects, and our success as a power owner depends on the quality of our EPC work. When you choose us, you choose a partner who not only brings the project to life but also ensures it is built to operate. 

Safety first


Building at sea means working in a high-hazard environment, and Ørsted always puts safety first. Alongside our strict ‘life-saving rules’ and contractor oversight, we bring innovation into play. This includes automated drone inspections, digital tracking for offshore lifts and logistics, and data systems that predict hazards before they occur. The results are safer workplaces, fewer incidents, and greater certainty for our projects. 

A proven EPC process


In terms of EPC, our advantage lies in a unique combination of legacy, scale, and life cycle focus. Our clients, investors, and local partners can trust us because we cover development, EPC, and operations within one integrated value chain – providing clear accountability and life cycle alignment from day one. 
Stage 1 – Early-stage engineering and consenting We start with seabed and site investigations, grid-corridor modelling, wind resource assessments, and technology selection.
Stage 2 – Procurement and supply chain set-up We select turbines, foundations, cables, and substations, negotiate long-term service agreements, and organise logistics.
Stage 3 – Construction and offshore installation We coordinate foundations, transition pieces, turbines, array and export cables, and onshore substation delivery and integration.
Stage 4 – Commissioning and handover We integrate offshore and onshore systems, execute commissioning tests, connect to the grid, and hand the asset over to operations.
Stage 5 – Operations and lifetime extension Because we also operate the asset, we hand over with operations readiness built in – ensuring predictable availability and seamless lifetime extension planning.
