How we assess, plan, implement, and monitor our impact on local ecosystems

Ørsted wants to deliver a net-positive biodiversity impact for all projects commissioned from 2030. This requires more than good intentions – it demands a consistent way to assess risks and impacts, set baselines, plan interventions, and track results throughout the full project life cycle.
That is why we’ve developed the Biodiversity Measurement Framework – the first of its kind in the energy industry. Developed with input from global biodiversity experts, the measurement framework builds on existing EIA and biodiversity practices, implementing global standards and local regulations to create a single, practical tool for our staff.

Once fully implemented in 2030, the framework will guide our actions and provide a transparent measure of our progress for community members, researchers, and investors.
 

An eight-step framework

The Biodiversity Measurement Framework sets out eight steps that ensure biodiversity is considered from the earliest project stages through to long-term operation.

Put into practice from 2030

In 2025, we completed a public feedback process and released a case study showing how the framework can be implemented in practice. The insights gained are now being used to refine our approach, ensuring it is both science-based and practical in real-world projects. From 2030, the measurement framework will be fully integrated into all new Ørsted projects.
