Ørsted is one of the world’s largest generators of renewable energy, delivering an estimated 2,000–4,000 MWh to power grids every hour. Most of this energy comes from our offshore wind farms – a form of power generation we pioneered and continue to lead by a wide margin. 

Delivering energy at this scale is a big responsibility. No longer an ‘alternative’ energy source, offshore wind has become the preferred large-scale renewable choice for powering homes, schools, hospitals, shops, and factories – especially in Europe, where on a good day, some countries derive 100 % of their electricity from renewables. 

Leading this market requires state-of-the-art assets, including supporting technologies – like our Hornsea 3 battery energy storage system (BESS) – and the ancillary services they enable us to provide. It also takes an operations and maintenance set-up that runs like clockwork, flexible options for purchasing the power we produce, and relentless innovation. Why offshore wind?


Offshore wind provides homegrown energy at gigawatt scale, strengthening energy security, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, helping to stabilise prices, enabling decarbonisation, and supporting biodiversity. It has already created tens of thousands of jobs across local and national economies – and delivered a massive reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

That’s why offshore wind has become the cornerstone of many countries’ renewable energy systems. With its large scale and efficiency – and given the proximity of power-hungry cities and industries to coastlines – it is also essential for meeting the world’s growing demand for electricity.

Operational excellence 


Ørsted operates 30 offshore wind farms worldwide, backed by more than three decades of experience. As of mid-2025, we had a total installed base of 10.2 GW, with a further 8.1 GW under construction and due for completion in 2027. We operate all Ørsted sites via our in-house generation hubs in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and North America. 

From the moment a new wind farm is handed over and throughout its lifespan of 30 years or so, our Generation team oversees all operations and maintenance, ensuring continuity and security of supply to the grids our assets serve. 

This involves regular preventive and corrective maintenance, complex in-house logistics and vessel management, and state-of-the-art asset health monitoring – all while keeping each other safe in some very harsh environments. 

Connecting energy with markets 


Selling renewable energy at scale is a complex undertaking that spans everything from structuring long-term origination contracts to next-day trading on spot markets. At Ørsted, our Trading & Revenue organisation develops and executes a wide range of route-to-market strategies. 

We negotiate corporate power purchase agreements (CPPAs) with global companies like Google, Covestro, and Amazon. We design advanced forward-curve modelling engines for medium-term trading. And our growing in-house trading floor is integrating state-of-the-art automated and systematic trading algorithms to optimise shorter-term trades. 

We do all of this from a whole-portfolio perspective, leveraging the breadth of our portfolio to maximise the value of the assets we invest in.

Wind farm development and construction 


At Ørsted, we develop and build every offshore wind farm we operate – managing the entire process from early site studies and bidding to final handover to our Generation team. 

Our integrated engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) capabilities enable us to design, source, and build our projects ourselves, ensuring safety, efficiency, and long-term performance from day one. 

By keeping development and construction under one roof, we reduce complexity, ensure quality, and deliver offshore wind farms built to operate for decades.

Innovating an industry 

 

Ørsted built the world’s first offshore wind farm in 1991 – and we’ve been improving how these sites are designed, built, and operated ever since. 

By scaling up site sizes and turbine capacity, streamlining foundation and installation methods, and applying digital solutions across construction and operations, we continue to drive down costs and boost efficiency. 

Together with our suppliers and technology partners, we’re developing new solutions – from next-generation turbines to heavy-lift cargo drones – that make offshore wind even more efficient, competitive, and safe.
