Tribal Relations Manager

Join us in this role where you’ll get to work with Native American tribes to identify, understand, and respond to interest in and potential concerns for impacts to their communities from project development. You’ll also develop and maintain cooperative tribal relationships through outreach programs, assist your colleagues in understanding and appropriately responding to tribal interest in and potential concerns with offshore renewable energy projects, and maintain consistent and regular communications with the tribes.

You’ll be part of a dynamic team working closely with our Permitting, Strategic Permitting, and Project teams where you, together with your colleagues, will have the opportunity to collaborate with multiple and diverse communities and tribes and increase your knowledge of Native American cultures in eastern North America.

You’ll play an important role in:

  • supporting initial communications with Native America tribes and collaborating with internal stakeholders to develop tailored outreach efforts to tribal communities
  • maintaining regular communications with tribes to enhance long-term relationships and mutual understanding
  • updating internal project teams on key tribal concerns and assisting in the development of effective responses
  • developing and facilitating training sessions to educate our team members on cultural histories and traditions and potential interfaces with our planning and permitting efforts
  • maintaining positive relations with tribes, providing information for community awareness, and tracking and reporting on interests or concerns identified through external communications
  • organizing regular meetings with external parties and being responsible for adjusting the schedules and approach to such meetings in response to internal and external stakeholder input.

To succeed in the role, you:

  • have a BA/BS in public policy, public administration, environmental studies, anthropology, Native American or indigenous studies, or related field of study
  • have at least seven (7) years of relevant work experience in government, community development, or non-profit sectors
  • have a demonstrated commitment to and experience with community interests in Native American communities
  • preferably, are familiar with the roles of state and federal agencies working with tribes – an understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act, National Environmental Policy Act, historic preservation, cultural resources, or energy development is not required but is a plus
  • have excellent communication skills and the ability to facilitate understanding among people with a broad range of technical and cultural knowledge and divergent perspectives
  • have excellent interpersonal skills and experience working effectively with diverse groups.
